The only Māori radio station in Auckland offering a comprehensive bilingual broadcast to its audience is called Radio Waatea. Situated in the heart of Aotearoa’s largest Māori population, it is headquartered at Ngā Whare Waatea marae in Mangere.
The Manukau Urban Māori Authority and Te Whanau a Waipareira Charitable Trust, the two Urban Māori Authorities, formed UMA Broadcasting Ltd in 1999 with the goal of identifying, promoting, and expanding broadcasting opportunities for urban Māori.
Since its establishment, UMA Broadcasting has been a major stakeholder in the 96.6 FM frequency that George FM broadcasts from in Tamaki. It has also established the Māori radio station in Tamaki, Makaurau Te Reo Irirangi o Waatea (Waatea 603am).
In essence, both stations served as means of implementing the vision of UMA Broadcasting.
